How to create a WBS

When defining the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), the Indent and Outdent features are used to indent and outdent tasks to position them at the appropriate level in the outline. When tasks are first entered into a project manually, all tasks are entered at the same level. The Indent (IndentGrey) and Outdent  (OutdentGrey) buttons enable users to create different task levels.

Important

If your Schedule Mode is "Critical Chain", do not forget to select the Planning Mode. The Switch to Tracking Mode (alarm22_md.png) button must be displayed in the Main toolbar.

  1. Log in to the HTML5 client.

  2. Select the Work workspace, Gantt tab.

  3. Select a project in the Project Data Selector.

  4. Select the Scheduler (viewmode_activegantt22_md.png) mode.

  5. In the Gantt spreadsheet, click on the task you want to indent or outdent.

  6. The (Checkbox) field displayed in the leftmost column of the spreadsheet will be checked.

  7. Click on the Indent (IndentGrey) or Outdent (OutdentGrey) buttons available in the Gantt toolbar.

Note

In order to Indent several tasks at once, select them from the top to the bottom.

Note

The relationship of tasks to each other in a WBS is known as a parent-child relationship, where the parent task works as a summary task to all its children, or lower-level tasks.

Sciforma provides up to ten levels in the WBS that can be formatted and coded. Level 0 is the highest level, and level 10 is the lowest level. It is possible to have more than ten levels in the WBS, but the Outline Code and spreadsheet formatting only recognize up to ten levels. Children tasks in the WBS are where the actual work takes place. Level 0 of the WBS represents the project and is generally reserved for the project name when a new project is created.
